Born in 1841, William Hodges worked to establish a local reputation as a builder and stonemason. In the nineteenth century, it was common for builders or carpenters to be part-time undertakers too. With Victorian funerals and masonry becoming more lavish, records show that by 1882 as William reached his forties, funerals and masonry had become his main business.
